Planning a trip with your dog? Whether heading out for a weekend road trip or a cross–country adventure, the right gear makes all the difference. We’ve traveled with our pups enough to know what works (and what doesn’t) to keep your dog safe, comfortable, and happy on the go.
Here’s what we pack every time—and why.
1. First Aid Kit
Accidents happen, especially when you’re exploring new environments. A dog–specific first aid kit should include bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, tick removal tools, and any medications your dog needs. It’s one of those items you hope you won’t use, but you’ll be glad to have it if you need it.
2. Primal Freeze–Dried Raw Patties
Our dogs love these. They’re lightweight, easy to portion, and shelf–stable—perfect for travel. Just add water and serve as a treat or meal. This is the best way to stick to their regular diet while on the road, especially when refrigeration isn’t guaranteed.
3. Biothane Leashes
These waterproof, easy–to–clean leashes are a must. We like them for beach trips, muddy hikes, and long days on the road because they don’t hold onto dirt or odors like fabric leashes. Bonus: They dry in seconds.
4. Ruffwear Flagline Harness
Secure, lightweight, and comfortable for long wear. The handle is a game changer for helping dogs in and out of the car or across rocky trails. We love this harness for both hiking and general travel days.
5. Doggie Walk Bags + Pick Up Tool
We keep the poop bags in one spot with the DWB Pick Up Tool. This helps us grab and secure the bag without touching anything gross. The clip keeps everything visible and ready to go.
6. Summit Pop–Up Food Bowls
Compact, lightweight, and easy to clean. These pop–up bowls collapse flat and are perfect for food or water on the go. We keep one clipped to the bag and a second one in the car.
7. Persure 27oz Dog Water Bottle
This portable stainless steel water dispenser is leak–proof, durable, and holds enough water for multiple dogs. It’s become our go–to whether at a trailhead or walking around town. It’s currently $15.95 on Amazon and is worth every penny.
8. YJGF Back Seat Extender Car Seat Cover
This hard–bottom cover turns the back seat into a stable surface, so the dogs can spread out without falling into the footwells. It’s waterproof, easy to clean, and protects your seats—ideal for muddy paws and wet fur.
Final Thoughts
Traveling with dogs takes a little extra planning, but it becomes part of the fun with the right gear. We’ve tested these items on road trips, local hikes, and long travel days, and they’ve made every adventure smoother for us and our dogs.
